About me — and why this site exists
Hi, I'm Varun. I run the AI with Varun YouTube channel — and like most creators starting out, my budget for apps and subscriptions is basically zero.
A while back I started noticing something annoying. Every "best AI tools" article I opened was clearly written for companies and professionals — tools priced for big companies and teams, recommended like price doesn't matter. If you're a student, a beginner or a small creator on a tight budget, that advice is useless. Worse, some of it felt like it was written to sell the tool, not to help the reader.
So I started doing it the other way around. I try the free tiers myself — on my own laptop, with my own real work: video scripts, research and content planning — and I write down what works, what hits a paywall at the worst moment, and what I'd honestly skip. That habit turned into my YouTube channel, AI with Varun, and now into this site, where the longer guides and cheat sheets live.
How I check a tool before writing about it
- Free tier first, always. If the free version can't do the job, I say the job needs a paid tool — I don't pretend otherwise.
- Real tasks, not demos. Video scripts and research, turning long documents into clean notes and summaries, planning content, building presentations — the jobs people actually open these tools for.
- Prices and limits from the source. I read the vendor's own pricing page, and every guide carries a "Last updated" date. When a limit changes, I update the page and note the change.
- Tested vs documented, labelled. If I haven't personally used a feature, the guide describes it as documented from the vendor — never as my experience.
If a free tool is enough, I'll tell you it's enough — even when the paid one could earn me a commission. A reader who trusts one honest "don't buy this" comes back. A reader who feels sold to doesn't.
What you'll find here
- Tools: free-tier-first comparisons with honest limits — including a "what I don't like" line, because every tool has one.
- Updates: dated, source-linked notes when tools change prices, limits or features.
- Tutorials: the exact workflows and prompts I use to research, script and make my channel's videos.
One promise, and one request
The promise: no income guarantees, no invented results, no rankings for sale. If this site ever earns affiliate commission, the disclosure sits at the top of the page, before the first link — you can read it in full on the Affiliate Disclosure page.
The request: if a guide is wrong or out of date, tell me — on the YouTube channel or Pinterest. I'd rather fix a page than leave a wrong limit standing where a reader will trust it.
